When it comes to date nights, Brandon and I tend to go out more often than not. Well, to be honest, Brandon and I just go out a lot. I wouldn’t consider every time we go out to dinner, date night. I think date night is a little more special than just dinner when you don’t feel like cooking, right?
But, nonetheless, Brandon and I go out quite a bit. It is something we have actually been working on. Staying in more and going out for actual date nights is something we both agreed to do more of this year.
However, staying in, just like going out, can get a little redundant at times, so it’s nice to switch things up every now and then. Having a date night at home is the perfect way to do that. But having a date night at home, means doing something a little extra so it doesn’t just feel like every other night. It means putting in a little more effort to create an energy that feels special.
We recently did a little summer date night at home, so I thought I would share the ways we made the night feel a little more special.
How to Have A Summer Date Night At Home
1. Cook Something Special Together
Most nights of the week I cook (Brandon cleans!) and the meals aren’t usually anything special. Just something quick, simple and healthy. So when we decided to stay in one night and have a date night, we decided we’d try out a new recipe and have it be something we could together.
We ended up choosing this Summer Grilled Chicken with Peach Chutney recipe from Kristin Cavallari’s cookbook True Roots. It allowed Brandon to do a bit of grilling, while I prepared the food and made the peach chutney.
2. Set the Table
Okay, so this is a really bad habit, but Brandon and I rarely sit at the table to eat dinner. It’s the only time we have to catch-up on our TV shows, so that’s usually where we eat dinner. There are times we do eat at the table, but it’s not something we put much effort in. No setting is ever really made.
However, since this is supposed to be a summer date night, we moved our meal to the table and actually set the table. Laid out the plates and silverware, had a bottle of wine, cloth napkins, flowers and some candles. It sets the mood and definitely helped in making the night feel a little more special.
3. Get Dressed
For me, one of the best parts about date night is getting dressed up. I feel like that is what kind of sets it apart from just “going out”. So, if you are having a date night at home, get dressed just as you would if you were going out.
Put on something nice, get ready and treat it as if you were walking out the door. Being dressed up, or even just not in pajamas or work clothes, will bring it to that date night level. It’ll definitely help make the night feel special. Plus it’s always appreciated when your partner puts a little effort into the way they look…especially when it’s just for you!
4. Take Your Time
When we go out to dinner, we are there for at least an hour, if not longer. However, dinner at home can be complete within 20 minutes. So when you are having a date night at home, slow it down, drag it out and enjoy it. Take time making dinner together, take the time getting ready, and when you sit down together, take the time to really enjoy each others company.
5. Treat Yourselves to Dessert and Follow-Up with a Movie
One thing we never do when out to dinner is enjoy dessert. However making dessert and enjoying it as if it is an extension of dinner will add the final “out to dinner” feel of the night. Brownies and ice cream is always my go-to!
After dinner and dessert, slip into something a little more comfortable, snuggle up on the couch and watch a movie. It will be the perfect way to end an evening at home that felt as if you were out on a very special date.
