A few years I ago, I went through a baking phase. I was constantly trying out new recipes, but no matter what, I just couldn’t get the hang of it. Oh the baked goods my husband had to suffer through. Ha! Eventually I realized baking was not my strong suit. I gave up and I now just stick to cooking.
However, when it comes to my babies, Bella and Cooper, I am willing to dust off the mixer and get to baking some dog treat recipes. The good news is, they’ll eat anything, so I don’t have to worry about how they turn out!
My mother-in-law started a side business a while back, now known as Bare Bones Barkery. She spends her evenings baking thousands of dog treats all in the cutest shapes, some with frosting and in a variety of flavors. She sells them every weekend at the Kalamazoo Farmers Market (stop by and say Hi if you’re there!).
What she does is A LOT of work, but I asked her for a simple dog treat recipe that I could make for Bella and Cooper as well as share here, on The Middle Edit.
As much I don’t like baking, I actually had fun with these. Bella stood at my feet the entire time while I snuck her pieces of carrots and then they were both there to taste the first batch out of the oven!
Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
This is a pretty basic recipe and as the notes from my mother-in-law pointed out, you can add additional ingredients to add flavor and make them extra special for your fur babies.
I ended up adding shredded carrots (gotta get those veggies) as well as beef bouillon, but in all honesty you can add any flavors/additional ingredients you want. I also purchased this set of cookie cutter on Amazon for like $8. The little paws and bone shapes are so cute!
Now that I know how easy it is to whip up a batch of dog treats, we will have less dog-treat specific trips to the grocery store!
