The word meditation comes with a lot of different meanings for a lot of different people. This post isn’t going to go deep in to all of that, but I do believe, in it’s simplest form, that meditation can benefit anyone and everyone. Because of this I wanted to share a few tips for you on how to start a meditation practice.
Meditation is not easy and it will take a lot of practice before you really start to feel the effects. However taking a few minutes out of your day to silence the mind is worth the effort.
5 Tips on How to Start a Meditation Practice
Just Do It
People tend to overthink the whole process and are defeated before they even start. Here’s the thing though, you don’t really need to do any specific when it comes to starting a meditation practice. Just make sure you are comfortable and that you are somewhere you won’t easily be distracted.
Designate a Specific Time
Meditating first thing in the morning is the most common and recommended time to do so. However if that doesn’t work for you, pick a time that does. Make sure though that the time you pick will work with your schedule no matter what day of the week it is. Meditating should become a habit. Having a designated time you practice every single day will make it that much easier.
As mentioned in the first paragraph, meditating is not easy! When you are first starting out, don’t attempt even a full 10 minutes. It will be hard and you will get discouraged. Keep it simple. Start with two minutes and work your way up from there as you continue your meditation practice.
Use an App
Using an app will make a world of difference when you are just starting out. There are plenty of options available, so just keep trying them until you find one that works. After trying several, I have landed on Calm being my favorite. Whether you want a guided meditation or just to set a timer and keep track of your practice, it’a a great app that I use daily.
Don’t Expect Total Silence
Meditation is all about silencing the mind, but like I’ve mentioned it’s a lot harder than it sounds. It takes a lot of practice. When you are first starting out your mind will definitely wander and you’ll think about everything and anything. Don’t let this discourage you. Keep practicing and you will learn to silence your mind.
While it isn’t easy and while it will take some time, meditation has some serious benefits. It helps to decrease stress and anxiety, increase focus, increase creativity and productivity among many other things. Just as we take vitamins to help with our physical health, learning how to start a meditation practice is a great way to help with our mental health.
Keep practicing and I promise it will be worth it!
