The “According to Him” posts are so much fun and allow us to really dig into the brains of our significant others. Matt and I have talked about pregnancy but I haven’t really asked him questions about what he thinks about the whole process. He is a first time expectant dad so there are lots of unanswered questions and unknowns. I have been pregnant now for 14 weeks and he has been a huge help. He’s been super understanding, patient and relaxed. There are moments though that I see him with a puzzled look on his face especially when one minute I’ll be perfectly fine and the next minute I feel like I’m going to be sick.
After asking Matt these series of questions I realized that he doesn’t really know anything about pregnancy, labor or delivery. I’ve realized that this is why he hasn’t been asking me questions because he doesn’t even know what questions to ask. He answered a lot of questions with “how would I know that?”. This gave me the opportunity to really understand what his thoughts are on being a first-time expectant dad and what he may need more information on. Lets just say, we may be going to a few baby classes in the near future.
According to Matt
When did you know it was time to try and start a family?
“Well I’m 34 years old and I’m not getting younger…why wait any longer? I feel like now is a perfect time in our life.”
What were your first thoughts when I told you I was pregnant?
“I didn’t think you were serious because I knew you were on a phone call right before that. Then you should me the pregnancy test and I said “here we go.”
What was the first thing you noticed about pregnancy?
“That you were sick all the time.”
What have you thought about the doctor appointments so far?
They’ve been very informative. The ultrasound was fast but it was cool to see. The ultrasound was cool but it was so small, we couldn’t really see anything that looked like a baby. Listening to the heartbeat was my favorite so far.
What did you not know about pregnancy until now?
“I guess the sickness…you can be sick on a whim. Also how tired it has made you.”
Me (Allison): “You didn’t know that before?”
Matt: “No, how would I know that?”
Are you glad we waited to have kids in our 30’s vs. our 20’s?
“Yes because I wasn’t close to being ready in my 30’s. I had career stuff, we were traveling, moving and doing all of that stuff. If we waited to have kids in our 20’s we wouldn’t have did the things we’ve done. Also we didn’t have family around (we lived 3.5 hours away)….so how would we have had kids?”
What are you most nervous about once the baby arrives?
“Having the time…I hope our baby doesn’t cry a lot like Ariana (our niece) too.”
What are you most excited about?
“Having a kid that I can teach and have a piece of myself in someone else.”
What are you most thankful for?
“That you’ve had a healthy pregnancy so far.”
Do you have any idea what labor and delivery is like?
“No I don’t. How would I know? Am I supposed to look it up on YouTube? I don’t like human blood so what if I pass out?”
To my baby daddy….thank you!
