Shortly after graduating with my doctorate in education I headed to Eugene, Oregon to start a 3-month internship. My 30th birthday just happened to be smack dab in the middle of it.
Yes, you read that right. I was an intern… at 30… with a doctorate. As you can imagine that was NOT what I thought I would be doing at that point in my life.
I decided to roll with it.
Let’s be honest, I didn’t really have any other options and I needed money. I had a doctorate to pay for, for the rest of my life. So there I was, spending my 30th birthday with strangers. Lucky for me they were amazing strangers and did everything they could to make me feel at home.
One of the aforementioned strangers gave me a birthday card that said 30 is… A smile came to my face as I read the card. That simple statement triggered something for me. For the first time in my life, I realized that I got to consciously choose what came after those three dots. 30 is… whatever I wanted it to be.
Once my intern duties concluded with the “strangers” that became life long friends, I headed back to Indiana. I was sitting on the floor in my apartment looking at the card that had now traveled with me across the country. Looking at it, I couldn’t stop thinking about the possibilities.
I decided to make a vision board at that moment. After all… I was still jobless.
I rushed to the store to get poster board, magazines, glitter pens, scrapbook materials, printed off specific pictures and, of course, grabbed a bottle of wine, turned on a movie I had seen 1000 times as to not be distracted and started cutting.
Other than the pictures I printed out, I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for. I flipped through the magazine pages and cut out anything that “spoke” to me. Seven magazines and a bottle of wine later pictures and quotes littered the floor.
I started to separate similar pictures and came across 5 themes in all the major life areas:
- Love & Relationships
I stuck everything neatly on the board with a glue stick, made it pretty and put it somewhere I would see it every day.
I just recently celebrated my 33rd birthday and decided to revisit that vision board.
Since creating it…
We have bought two houses
I have had two jobs (the second for $30,000 more than the first)
I have been to Mexico, Australia, Miami and all over the country
My diet is balanced and I don’t obsess over it (as much as I used to anyway)
My relationship is every bit as amazing despite a year of distance and a cross country move.
Since that vision board, I have been a dedicated student of the Law Of Attraction and discovered the step by step process I used (on accident) to manifest my dreams.
Warning: analogies everywhere. Ready?
7 Ways to Manifest Your Desires
1. Get Clear on what you want
How is the universe going to know what to give you if you don’t know what you want?
If you want a new car you don’t go to a random dealership and say I’ll take whichever one runs well. You might end up in a 1998 station wagon with one of those bumper stickers with a family of stick figures on the back holding hands.
You have to be detailed and specific about the exact car you want… A 2019 matte black G Wagon with black leather seats a sunroof and a pink license plate.
Put pen to paper and write out a list of your desires. Circle a few that stand out and be as specific and as detailed as possible. Give yourself permission to think big, bigger than anything you have. Don’t put restrictions on yourself.
2. Tell the universe
To manifest, you have to actually ask for what you want. Say it out loud. You wouldn’t go to a restaurant select an item from the menu, make all your modifications and then not tell your server. You will have just wasted time and still be hungry.
Same goes for putting your desires out there! You can do this a few ways…
My go-to is a vision board, obvi. However, you can also write a letter to the universe or use visualizations. This will allow you to communicate your desires clearly and help you to pay attention to the way your current desires make you feel.
3. Take inspired action
To manifest your desires, you have to take action. So many people think that you can just say what you want and the universe will deliver your desires at your door with no further work from you. Tapping into the Law of Attraction means you are co-creating with the universe.
You have to take action. Not just any action, inspired action. What is inspired action? It is an action you take when you are feeling an internal desire. It isn’t a plan or following steps. This type of action is almost always accompanied by energy, and feelings of excitement and joy.
When you are taking inspired action, the work you accomplish doesn’t feel like actual work because it is something you are feeling drawn to while you are working toward the things you want.
4. Trust the process
Once you get clear on what you want, after you tell the universe, and once you start taking action, you have to release attachment to the outcome and trust the process. The how is not for you to worry about. The how will happen in ways you couldn’t even have imagined.
Worrying yourself over the timing or how slow things are going will only create resistance. You are closer now than you were before and will continue to move closer as you take more action.
A good way to help yourself trust the process is to use affirmations. One of my favorite affirmations is… “my success is inevitable and the I am always on the right path.” Choose a saying that works for you. One that allows you to know the universe has your back. Say it as often as you need.
5. Pay Attention
It’s important you acknowledge what you’re receiving. Being grateful for what you have opens the door to receive more of what you want. Also, the more you pay attention to the signs the universe is giving you, letting you know you are on the right track, the more ease and flow you will have reaching them.
I keep both a gratitude journal and an evidence journal to track all of the ways the universe is helping me. I find that it gives me more confidence and raises my vibration, which brings me to my next point.
6. Keep your vibes high
Basic Manifest/Law of Attraction principle is like attracts like. Everything is made up of energy and that energy vibrates at a certain frequency. When manifesting your desires you want to match the frequency of that which you are trying to attract.
High Vibe: Love, money, success, fulfillment.
Low Vibe: Debt, poor relationships, negative experiences.
We want to live in the land of high vibes.
A few ways to raise your vibration…
- Do more things you love
- Be positive and optimistic
- Be grateful
7. Clear the clutter and resistance
If you feel like you manifest but haven’t received what you want yet it is most likely for two reasons. You don’t have space for it or you have resistance to it somehow in the form of procrastination, fear, anxiety, doubt and so on.
This is entirely normal. Manifesting means the desires you want to bring into your life are things you’ve never had before and that can be scary AF. In order to bring our desires to life, we need to declutter and release resistance.
To put it into practical terms, let’s say your favorite boutique is giving away a $500 gift card that you are dying to win.
What does your closet look like? Is it full of shirts you haven’t worn in 5 years or shoes you’re holding onto for what-if moments? Do you have space to put $500 worth of new clothes in there?
Choose something to declutter this week like your purse. Invite more money in!
The most important thing in order to manifest your desires is that you understand that you can truly have anything you desire if you believe you are worthy of having it.
