“To change your life, you have to change yourself. To change yourself, you have to change your mindset”
Changing your mindset is not easy. If you have beliefs, feelings and/or habits that you’ve had for years, you are not going to be able to change them over night. However, if there is one thing I’ve learned since turning 30, it is that we are in full control of what we think, how we view the world and how we react to our situations.
As mental health becomes more of a priority for people, I think it is important to discuss just how much our mindset plays a role.
The idea of being able to change my mindset, and in turn, be happier with my life, started with a podcast and quickly turned to books. I will devour anything that teaches or reiterates the importance of keeping a positive mindset. Any bit of information that explains how and why being mindful and focusing on our mindset is important. It’s a lesson and eventually a reminder that we all need.
If mental health, having a more positive outlook. being happier, making changes or anything along those lines is something you plan on prioritizing this year, here are 7 books to change your mindset and do just that!
7 Books to Change Your Mindset for The Better
The Happiness Advantage
I’ve talked a lot about how I strongly believe we are only as happy as we make our minds up to be and this book proves that theory to be true. The Happiness Advantage is all about changing our mindsets to see the positive in our lives. It’s about how our brains are actually hardwired to perform their best when they are positive. It proves being more successful does not guarantee happiness, but that happiness can guarantee more success. The Happiness Advantage teaches us to retrain our mindsets to see the positive and that is a lesson everyone should learn!
When Breath Becomes Air
This book is a little different than the rest of the books on this list. It is a memoir, not a “self-help” book. I don’t remember exactly how I ended up reading this book, but it is fascinating, to say the least.
The author, Paul Kalanithi, was a neurological surgeon, who, at 36, gets diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. When Breath Becomes Air is written during his battle with cancer and is about him trying to find “what makes life worth living in the face of death”. I’ll admit, it’s not the most uplifting book and it will make you cry, but it will also make you think and it will make you appreciate life that much more.
The Power of Habit
If you are like the rest of us, you probably have a habit you would like to break. Or maybe you have a habit you would like to create. This book is for you. The Power of Habit explains how habits work, how/why we create them, how we can break the bad habits, as well as how we can create new habits. This is a more scientific way to look at habits, however the book provides practical steps to take, as well as real life examples. It’s the perfect book to help you change your mindset on something that you want to do more and/or less of.
The 5 Minute Journal
Okay, so not really a book, but hear me out. I’ve talked about this journal endlessly because it really is one of my favorite things ever. So why is it on this list? The 5 Minute Journal is a gratitude journal and if there is one thing I’ve learned over the past few years, it is that gratitude is everything.
Practicing gratitude on a daily basis will help you to realize the good in life. Even if it is the smallest, tiniest, bit of gratitude, writing it down and focusing on it can change your mindset on how a day went. If you tend to let the bad days get the best of you, or feel that your life could be better in someway or some how, then practicing gratitude, using The 5 Minute Journal, will help you to improve your mindset to be more positive space as well as focus on the good.
You Are A Badass
I know this book is on every list “must read” list around. I thought for sure it was just going to be another fluffy book, pointing out the obvious. However it really is a great book. And because it really did give me a little mindset shift, I couldn’t not include it on this life of books to change your mindset.
What I loved most about this book is that the author, Jen Sincero, gives real life examples, followed by real life advice. This book is perfect for those of us who need a self-confidence boost and/or a little motivation to get our of our own way. You Are A Badass does point out the obvious, but in an “ah-ha”, inspiring way. Not in a way that makes you roll your eyes and say “duh”. It promotes self-love and, another one of my favorite mindset shifts, the power of manifestation. If you are new to these sort of “self-help” books, I would highly suggest starting with You Are A Badass.
Dare to Lead
The author, Brene Brown, never disappoints when it comes to inspiring her readers and with Dare to Lead is no different. While it is a book on leadership, it should still be on a list of books to change your mindset. It’s about learning to be more self-aware, especially when it comes to how we respond to our fears. We might not all be leaders in the work place, but at some point in life, we will all lead. Whether it’s your family or a group of friends, having the courage to lead is not something that comes easy to everyone. Dare to Lead goes through the armor we all use to hide our fear and our vulnerability then presents you with the skill set to change your mindset so that you are able to become a successful, strong leader.
You can’t discuss books to change your mindset without one that discusses being mindful. 10 % Happier is a book all about mindfulness and how meditation can make you 10% happier. Learning to be mindful takes a lot of practice. It’s a way to see the world in a differently. According to the author, Dan Harris, being “mindful represents an alternative to living reactively”. He goes on to explain that being mindful is about being aware of yourself. 10% Happier is a great book for those who want to learn to step outside of what is happening around them and be able to approach situations from a less reactive place.
